Sustainability accreditations/certifications what is good and what should you aim for

One thing we’ve observed during our time at R2G is just how many sustainability accreditations exist in the market. Each has its own merits and unique selling points, but for a business trying to choose one, the landscape can feel overwhelming. So, what’s the right solution? Which accreditation should you pursue? And is there a single “best” option?

The honest answer: it depends.

Not as a cop‑out, but because several factors influence which accreditation (if any) is right for your organisation.

If your main customer is a public body, the path is often dictated for you. For example, many public sector organisations require PPN 06/21, while NHS suppliers must follow the Evergreen assessment. Different departments may have slightly different expectations, but the good news is that these requirements are published openly on their respective websites. So one logical starting point is to review your key customers and assess what they require.

If your customers don’t specify an accreditation, another approach is to look at your competitors. Identify the leading players in your sector and see which accreditations they hold. From there, conduct a cost–benefit analysis to determine whether pursuing the same certification makes sense. Many sustainability accreditations follow a similar baseline structure, but they differ in the areas they emphasise depending on the target market. For instance, ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management systems, making it well‑suited to manufacturing, logistics, and construction companies. In contrast, BREEAM is specifically designed for the built environment. Reviewing what similar organisations have chosen can help you pinpoint what’s most relevant to your market.

Another route is to explore a holistic, cross‑sector accreditation such as B Corporation. This framework evaluates all aspects of your business and even provides a free assessment tool so you can estimate your score before applying. B Corp certification is globally recognised, wide‑ranging, and a strong signal of responsible business practices.

If you already have a sustainability strategy in place, you’re likely further along the journey than you think. Most accreditations require you to assess current performance, gather evidence or data, and set out a plan for improvement. The main differences lie in the specific standards each framework uses. A strategy built on measurement and evidence gives you the core building blocks needed to pursue a wide range of certifications.

If you don’t yet have a sustainability strategy, it may be worth developing one. A well‑designed strategy improves operational efficiency, strengthens your environmental and social impact, and provides a clear narrative to share with customers and stakeholders. It becomes both a roadmap for internal progress and a foundation for any certification you may choose to pursue.
