Helping St Peter's Primary School plan future estate investment with confidence
Carr Hill Primary School in Retford has always championed sustainability, not just for environmental reasons, but because it knows that an efficient building helps protect precious budgets. Previous improvements, including solar PV, LED lighting, and heating system upgrades, had already made a difference.
Eager to keep moving forward, the school asked R2G to explore what more could be done, with one clear condition: any recommendations had to be cost-effective, realistic within a school’s financial constraints, and not increase staff workload.
By analysing real energy data, R2G identified opportunities to cut wasteful out-of-hours use. These changes alone could save the school thousands every year with no additional cost, equipment, or disruption.
A minor £640 control installation across all basins reduced unnecessary heating, cutting hot water costs by £2,700 per year. A simple, low-cost action with a huge payback.
With quick wins delivering early savings, R2G proposed a longer-term plan to reinvest into the building fabric. These improvements would reduce heat loss, enhance comfort, and secure lasting value for the school.
By focusing on low cost and high impact improvements, R2G were able to uncover significant savings for Carr Hill Primary School. In total, over £4,000 a year could be saved with an investment of only £640, combining both behaviour changes and hot water improvements. These savings open new opportunities for Carr Hill to make building improvements that were previously considered out of reach.

R2G analysed a full year of half-hourly energy data, uncovering significant savings potential through smarter use of existing systems.
Using the School’s goals, R2G created a clear plan of action with immediate and long-term results. The roadmap ensured the staff’s workload wasn’t increased whilst recognising they were key to ensuring behavioural changes were implemented.
For Carr Hill the business case helped to forecast future spending on their building. Previously allocated budget for the building could be directed towards the school itself as the new savings could be reinvested back into the property.
