Brighter Mansfield is an independent charity delivering vital services across Mansfield and the surrounding area, supporting local people through health, wellbeing, education, community connection and empowerment initiatives.
Having already taken positive steps to manage energy use through strong day-to-day behaviours, Brighter Mansfield was in a strong position to look at the next stage of savings. With many quick wins already in place, the focus shifted to larger, longer-term improvements that could reduce running costs and strengthen resilience for years to come.
With multiple large window areas across the property, heat loss was a key consideration during colder months. We recommended targeted secondary glazing to improve thermal performance, helping rooms stay warmer for longer while reducing heating demand.
We assessed the suitability of solar PV as a practical next step. Solar generation can lower reliance on imported electricity, reduce exposure to rising energy prices and create long-term savings that can be reinvested into frontline services.
As the next phase of savings was likely to come through larger capital improvements, understanding potential funding routes was an important part of the review. This helped shape which measures were most practical, affordable and realistic to deliver.
Brighter Mansfield received a clear, prioritised plan focused on meaningful cost reduction and future resilience. By identifying improvements with measurable benefit, they were able to explore investment decisions with confidence and a clear understanding of likely returns.
Most importantly, every pound saved on energy creates more room to support the people and communities who rely on their services.
The work done by the R2G team has really supported us as a charity to understand what we can do to lower our energy usage and, as an organisation where every penny saved on utilities is used to support people, this helps us continue making a difference to lives in Mansfield.
The process was made as simple as possible, allowing us to complete a meaningful and important project without spending lots of time on it ourselves.
We came away with a fully developed, costed set of recommendations that will support us when approaching funders for energy reduction schemes and help us achieve even better value for our charity’s money.

We started by recognising the positive work already in place, including strong controls around heating, zoning and day-to-day energy use. This allowed us to focus time where it would add the most value.
We concentrated on the areas most likely to deliver meaningful savings: building fabric improvements and on-site renewable generation.
We translated findings into a practical roadmap with prioritised actions, expected benefits and support available to move delivery forward when the organisation was ready.
