The King’s School, Grantham is a respected secondary grammar school with a strong commitment to providing an excellent learning environment for its pupils, staff and wider school community. Alongside its educational priorities, the school is also taking a proactive approach to managing its estate responsibly, ensuring resources are used efficiently and long-term decisions support both financial resilience and environmental improvement.

With Climate Action Plan requirements now applying to schools, King’s Grantham wanted to better understand where energy savings could be achieved across its estate and how building performance could be improved over time. The project provided a clear, practical route forward, identifying opportunities to reduce energy costs, improve comfort and support the school’s wider sustainability goals.

The work also created opportunities to engage pupils with real-world sustainability initiatives, helping demonstrate how practical action within the school environment can contribute to both environmental and financial outcomes.

Key Focus Areas

Behaviour & Operational Improvements

Operational changes were identified that could deliver immediate savings without investment. Opportunities included optimising heating and cooling settings, reducing out-of-hours energy use and improving shutdown procedures during weekends and holidays. Recommendations were supported by implementation plans to help turn projected savings into reality.

Building Fabric Improvements

Targeted glazing improvements and additional loft insulation were identified to improve the thermal performance of the school. These measures help reduce heat loss, lower heating demand and create more comfortable learning environments.

Solar PV

Solar PV was identified as a strong long-term opportunity to reduce reliance on grid electricity and support the school's decarbonisation goals. By generating energy on-site, the school can reduce costs while improving resilience against future energy price increases.

Results

We recommended that King’s Grantham focus on an initial set of priority actions capable of reducing annual energy spend by 22%, with a payback of just over 3 years.

These opportunities combined low-cost operational improvements, targeted building fabric upgrades and on-site renewable energy generation to deliver both immediate and long-term benefits. The recommendations gave the school a clear, evidence-based pathway to reduce costs, improve building performance and support its sustainability ambitions.

Get in touch!

R2G were incredibly easy to work with throughout the project. They took what can often feel like a complex subject and presented it in a clear, practical and manageable way. What stood out was their focus on helping us understand not only what improvements were possible, but also how to prioritise and actually deliver them. The result was a clear roadmap for action rather than a lengthy report full of recommendations with no obvious next steps.

R2G's Approach

Establishing a Baseline

We carried out a detailed review of the school's buildings, energy consumption and operational practices to understand current performance and identify where the greatest opportunities for improvement existed.

Prioritising Practical Opportunities

Rather than producing a list of generic recommendations, we focused on measures that could realistically be implemented by the school, prioritising opportunities based on impact, cost and ease of delivery.

Creating a Clear Route Forward

Our findings were translated into a structured action plan that gave the school a clear understanding of what should happen next, why each recommendation mattered and how improvements could be delivered over time. This ensured the review became a practical tool for decision-making rather than simply another report sitting on a shelf.
